He's a Creature of The 'Knight'By Christy Slewinski October 31, 1995 |
| THE skies above Manhattan are hauntingly clear even the electric
lights along 57th St. can't compete with the bright beams streaming
from the full moon above. It's a great night for an interview with a vampire. Little do the revelers at Jekyll & Hyde know that he's there, near the bar, swigging from a bottle of Celtic ale the guy can't have Bloody Marys all the time. Looking around, Geraint Wyn Davies, star of the TV series "Forever Knight," explains he didn't intend to become a crime-solving vampire. He was actually on a brief hiatus from the London theater, having just finished "Hamlet" and about to start work in "The Seagull" when, to, uh, kill time, he auditioned for the TV show. Before he could say "I vant to suck your blood," Davies was being fitted for fangs. "It was only for 13 episodes, I thought," Davies admitted between bites of a chicken sandwich (no ketchup). "But it was one of those contracts for which you sign your life away for the next 150 years." (No big deal for an immortal.) Now in its third season, "Forever Knight" airs Sunday nights at 1 a.m. on WNYW/Ch. 5, and on cable's USA Monday nights at 10 and Thursdays at midnight. And forget all that scary old Dracula stuff Davies' vampire does things '90s-style. First off, Nick Knight is trying to kick his bloodsucking habit of 700 years. Instead of stalking victims, he works nights as a homicide detective, taking a bite out of crime while trying to become mortal once again. Wales-born Davies lives much like his character working by night, sleeping by day. This season, he's also taken on some directing duties, as well. It leaves precious little time to spend with his family, wife Alana, and children Galen, 7, and Pyper, 9, and still get adequate sleep. But, they make it work. "Alana has the house soundproofed," he says, grinning. "If there's anything that wakes me up, actually, it's 'Shhhhhhhhhh!' That can wake me up quicker than anything."
